Caste aside in Tamil Nadu

The knots around the tragic death of E. Illavarasan, a Dalit youth from Tamil Nadu, may not be untied soon. Yet his marriage to Divya, who belonged to the intermediate Vanniyar caste (which led to the ransacking of three Dalit settlements by the the Vanniyars in November 2012), as well as his untimely death, are moments to rethink the status of caste politics in the state — historically known for its caste-based political mobilisation.
