Mid-day meal scheme: A tragedy waiting to happen

At least 22 children have died and 25 others have been admitted to hospital since Tuesday after eating a contaminated mid-day meal at a primary school in Bihar. The quality of meals served within the mid-day meal programme, launched in 1995, has consistently been a point of concern for the government. In 2010, a Planning Commission report on implementation of the scheme across 17 states revealed that most schools had inadequate infrastructure, served food of questionable quality, and lacked basic hygiene.
