'Riots underscore need of police reforms'

The political complicity in the Muzaffarnagar riots, as revealed by a TV news channel's sting operation, underscores the need for the much-delayed police reforms in Uttar Pradesh and elsewhere in the country. This was the joint message on Wednesday from civil society groups fighting for the implementation - "in letter and spirit" - of the 2006 Supreme Court judgment on police reforms, which seek to insulate the law enforcement machinery from political interference.
