SC allows negative ballot, Provide 'none of the above' option, EC told

In a landmark judgment for India's democracy, the Supreme Court on Friday empowered citizens to cast a negative vote to convey to political parties that none of the candidates in the fray in an election is worthy of their vote. The judgment's impact could be evident as early as the forthcoming assembly polls due in November and the 2014 Lok Sabha elections since the court directed the Election Commission to begin providing 'none of the above (NOTA)' option in electronic voting machines (EVMs) in a phased manner. It also asked the EC to carry out an awareness programme for voters.
