Centre opposes ex-officio secy status for CBI chief

The Centre on Wednesday told the Supreme Court that it was 'strongly opposed' to the CBI's proposal to confer its director with ex-officio secretary status to enable him to report directly to the minister in charge of department of personnel and training (DoPT). In its affidavit, the DoPT also objected to granting the CBI director the power to appoint special public prosecutors as it would strike at the root of the independence of prosecutors who play an important role in the criminal justice system.
