Lokpal: A step forward

It is simplistic to see the passing of the Lokpal and Lokayuktas Bill by Parliament as the culmination of the anti-corruption crusade launched by Anna Hazare. In a maturing, post-reform economy like India, which is struggling to cope with problems of development and inequality, it is an idea whose time has come. If this were not so, some sort of political ruse or excuse would have delayed or stymied the Bill, as it had been for more than four decades after the idea of creating an anti-corruption ombudsman was mooted.
