Selection of party nominees for the politically crucial Uttar Pradesh has long been a source of agony for the BJP leadership. It was more than a decade ago that the party unit in the state, which with 80 Lok Sabha seats fuelled three successive power runs for the Centre, degenerated into a collective of squabbling satrapies, each led by a chieftain who would put his selfish interest above organizational goals.
