NREGS, UPA's lifeline, in sick bay

Remember MGNREGS, the rural job guarantee scheme? It was one of UPA's most talked-about welfare schemes, and contributed to its 2009 poll victory. In the current election campaign, Congress has put it on the back-burner. The party manifesto mentions it in passing, with no promise to strengthen or streamline it. Funds were squeezed last year leading to a decline in beneficiary numbers. It seems the scheme is headed for a quiet burial.
