Mulayam’s ‘rape as mistake’ comment sparks outrage

Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh on Thursday described rapes as “mistakes”committed by boys, sparking outrage and strong condemnation by political parties, women's groups and the National Commission for Women (NCW). Addressing an election rally in Moradabad, he referred to the recent Shakti Mills rape verdict where death penalty was awarded to three rape accused, and said: “Ladke, ladke hain. Galti ho jati hai, iska ye matlab nahin ki phaansi de di jaye (Boys are boys. They commit mistakes but that does not mean they should be hanged).”
