Skull caps are no symbol of secularism

The media debate over Muslim skull-cup has recently been revived with Narendra Modi and Rajnath Singh taking divergent positions. On September 19, 2011 Narendra Modi had refused to put on the Muslim skull cap presented to him by Maulana Hazrat Sufi Iman Sahi Sayeed Mehendi Hussain at Ahmedabad.   The occasion was Modi’s three-day ‘Sadbhavana’ fast where a lot of Muslims had turned up. Modi had accepted the shawl but not skull cap. This had left the Maulana fuming at ‘insult’ to Islam.
