Giving up the chimera of a Third Front

As the election season draws to a close, speculation about the next government—the party that will form it, the alliance partners and the nature of the coalition—have been the subject of speculation. Late last week, Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi stated that his party will not support any Third Front. His statement came almost at the same time as Prakash Karat, general secretary of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) or CPI (M), said the Congress should take the lead in helping form a “secular” government and prevent the emergence of a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) led government.
