Proposed Teesta accord against India’s interest
Foreign Secretary Ranjan Mathai’s clarificatory (or should it be placatory?) statement on Monday against the backdrop of a justifiably enraged Mamata Banerjee raising a red flag over the terms and conditions of the proposed India-Bangladesh agreement on sharing the water of Teesta river may serve the purpose of calming an enraged ally of the Congress and minimising New Delhi’s embarrassment, but it does not explain why the Government offered to settle for far more than what was originally agreed upon.
