SC's decision to review VIP security is welcome

Though belated, the Supreme Court’s decision to look into the official guidelines for providing VIPs with their ubiquitous posse of security personnel is welcomed. The move followed a petition challenging the provision of Z-level protection, the highest in this category, to an MLA in UP, Pramod Tiwari, on the grounds that he faced a threat from the Sikh militants way back in 1985. The militancy has faded away but Tiwari continues to enjoy the protection of 50 armed men. Although the security cover provided to 50 VIPs was recently downgraded, the UP legislator remains among the privileged.
