Warning signs for UPA

Drawing a blank in recent byelections held in Haryana, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh and Bihar ought to worry the ruling UPA. It is tempting to dismiss the poll outcomes as straws in the wind from which future electoral trends cannot be extrapolated. But a popularity deficit - stemming from multiple problems such as inflation, economic slowdown and graft - may well be staring the Congress in the face. If not arrested, the slide may cause the Congress - now in power at the Centre for seven years - further electoral erosion in next year's assembly elections, not to mention crucial general elections in 2014.
