Government must not play into separatists' hands

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah is squarely to blame for giving the separatists an opportunity to raise their head. Thursday’s shutdown in the Valley might have been called by them but its genesis lies in his recent thoughtless statement that the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act would be withdrawn from some parts of the state. He did not even consult the Centre before making the statement, which was lapped up by the separatists who have always been campaigning against the Act.
