From a consumers' standpoint, telecom and airlines have been the most visible success stories of liberalisation in India. Two simple statistics bear this out. In 2000-01, there were hardly four telephones for every 100 people, whereas, by 2010-11, the ratio had reached 71. The same period also saw the number of passengers travelling annually by domestic flights multiply from less than 1.4 crore to about 5.5 crore. It goes without saying that all this would not have happened but for the opening up of both the sectors to private competition, thereby ending the dominance of stodgy, state-owned monopolies.
