Pakistan's decision to grant India Most Favoured Nation (MFN) status is not only a vindication of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's policy of patient engagement with Islamabad, it marks a step forward for South Asia as a whole. India had granted Pakistan MFN status way back in 1996. But Pakistan had failed to reciprocate, a reminder of the vexed bilateral issues that plague the two neighbours. However, with Pakistan now delivering on the MFN issue, two-way trade is set to receive a big boost. This in turn should have a positive impact on the political engagement front, improving the prospects of peace in the subcontinent.
