Expand CAG’s mandate

Given the multitude of scams involving senior Ministers and bureaucrats in the UPA regime and reports of gross mismanagement of social sector spending, Comptroller & Auditor-General Vinod Rai suggestion that that all Government expenditure should be audited by the CAG merits serious consideration. The national audit organisation at present covers 50 per cent of total Plan expenditure. It is anybody’s guess as to what a full audit of the remaining 50 per cent would reveal.
