If the Middle East was the focus of international politics in the last decade and Europe the decade before, East Asia is where the geopolitical action is now. That has made it the focus of what US secretary of state Hillary Clinton describes as America's "strategic pivot" towards the region, even as America's president shows up at the East Asia Summit for the first time. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh too is in attendance at Bali, and the American push for an open and inclusive definition of the Asia-Pacific community converges with Indian interests.
