Case for small States
As an idea, Chief Minister Mayawati’s proposal to carve out four new States from Uttar Pradesh merits serious consideration. Smaller administrative units would benefit the State’s more than eight crore people as it would make governance easier and effective. After all, it is a fact that Uttar Pradesh, due to its huge size and population is a rather unwieldy State to administer at the best of times. The benefits of governance often do not reach the interior regions of the State because they are too far away from the seat of power in Lucknow. This in turn promotes disenchantment and unrest among the local population. It was keeping in mind these and similar other factors that the State was bifurcated in November 2000 and Uttarakhand came into being.
