More than half the power generation capacity created in the current fiscal so far has come from private producers. This is phenomenal considering that they accounted for less than 10 per cent a mere four years ago. Clearly, State utilities and Central undertakings such as NTPC stand marginalised in the scheme of things here. What is even more significant is that the promoters now are neither foreigners nor have they sought state guarantees as a pre-condition for setting them up, something that Enron did in the early 1990s.
