Personality vs policy

Look around you. Amidst the saris, statues and handbags, one thing is clear - our politics is lost in a maze of personality cults. And that's harming us. The FDI fracas mirrors this. Moved by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, the policy should ideally have been backed strongly by the Congress - and especially by the Gandhis, their leadership based on metaphor and memory involving many Gandhis. Their cult of charisma - blending history with fable and power with emotion - envelops the Gandhis like a shawl.
