Don't let go
Serious dissensions within the UPA's ranks have forced the government to keep retail reform on hold. The move comes on the back of Mamata Banerjee's dogged refusal to endorse the reform. Understandably, the ruling Congress wants to keep the 19 MP-strong Trinamool Congress, the single largest UPA constituent, on its side. In the coalition's interest, the ruling party has agreed to put matters on hold. There's talk of securing a consensus among political parties on retail reform. It is, however, strongly in the Congress's interest to keep pushing. If, by securing consensus on retail reform, Congress means giving a veto power over it to the BJP-led opposition, then it will have sealed its own fate.
