Censorship by stealth
The move by the Congress-led UPA Government to impose censorship by stealth on the Internet is at once abhorrent and deplorable. Union Minister for Telecommunications Kapil Sibal, who has been fielded by the Government — or possibly his party’s high command since it wields far greater influence and authority than a person who is notionally Prime Minister — to do the dirty deed, has robustly sought to defend the indefensible by taking recourse to the stale bunkum about the need to banish offensive material from the public space that can provoke communal riots or defame “popular leaders”.
