Hobbled in Andhra

The fact that as many as 16 Congress MLAs have risked disqualification by voting against their Government led by Kiran Kumar Reddy in the Andhra Pradesh Assembly during a recent no-trust vote demonstrates how precariously the regime is poised. What is significant here is that these legislators are said to be supporters of YSR Congress chief Jaganmohan Reddy, who quit the Congress after charging the party’s high command with humiliating him and insulting his father’s memory. Although the Government has survived the no-confidence motion moved by the Telugu Desam, securing 160 votes against 122 votes garnered by the Opposition, it cannot dismiss the revolt within its ranks as inconsequential.
