Dubious, if not deceitful

The charge against Union Minister for Home Affairs P Chidambaram that he has used his office to help a former client to wriggle out of a criminal case is serious enough to make his continuance in the Cabinet untenable. Since the issue is now in public domain and there is sufficient material evidence, Mr Chidambaram cannot brush aside the charge of misusing his office as “unfounded”. The facts of the case are clear: Between 1993 and 2003 he had represented, as a lawyer, a hotelier in a case of financial dispute. The hotelier also floated a trust named after former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi and forged the letterheads of various Members of Parliament to collect donations.
