Gathering speed

Amid all the indecisiveness and policy paralysis that has gripped the Government, here at last is something positive to take note of. The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is set to award contracts for developing a record 7,300 km of roads in the current fiscal, a good 40 per cent more than what it did in 2010-11. When we consider that the achievement in 2009-10 was a paltry 3,360 km, it points to a significant streamlining in tendering procedures. The importance of these cannot be understated in the current environment, where investments in general have virtually come to a halt. The NHAI plans to take up 10,000 km of works for the coming fiscal.
