A difficult year ends

The past year has been a very difficult one. It has run totally against generally-held expectations. Namely, this was supposed to have been a year in which advanced economies consolidate their recovery from the crisis of 2008-09 and the emerging ones, especially those in Asia, shine as they cruised ahead at great speed. Both of these expectations did not materialise.
